I've admittedly been doing a bad job of keeping up with the latest Apple rumors, particularly when it comes to the iPhone 17 series. Particularly when it comes to the 'iPhone 17 Air", specifically where in the lineup it's going to sit.

For those of you who are more on top of the rumor mill, is the 'iPhone 17 Air', according to the current rumors, intended to replace the non-Pro Plus iPhone (due to lack of popularity)? Or are current rumors suggesting that it's going to stand on its own as a third option? Or are they suggesting that it will ultimately replace the SE?

As a disclaimer: I know that no one outside of Apple knows what is definitely going to happen. And, incidentally, that's NOT what I'm asking. I'm just behind on this one tidbit within the current Apple rumors meta.

I doubt they would sell the 17 Plus with a 6.7” display alongside a 17 Air with 6.6” display… unless the 17 Air is actually a flip phone.

Also with strong rumours that the whole 17 series having Promotion displays, a 17 Plus would seriously cannibalise the 17 Pro Max wouldn't it (which is good for the consumer but not Apples shareholders!).

It’ll be one of the four new devices this September. No real changes to news since the rumors first started about this device. It’ll use Apple’s in-house modem which doesn’t support mmW.

SE is still 6.1-inch with notch, so doesn’t cannibalize the rest of the lineup.

…and in spite of sacrificing some functionality for “thinnest”, rumored to be “same great price” or higher to maximize them profits. Fattening margin by trimming features while holding “same great price” or higher seems to be the ultimate “catch up” to about all Apple activities last few years. For a very long time, target margin was a very high 38-40%. Now it is nearly 50%… and rising. 💰💰💰

Yep, people will either buy it or not.

I'm mildly bummed that it seems even a bit likely that the 17 Air will replace the 16 Plus (instead of a 17 Plus). I wasn't sold on it during the 14 series or the 15 series, but I kind of like the 16 Plus.
