Apple in March revealed its redesigned TV app, and with it a new "Apple TV Channels" feature, which lets users sign up for third-party subscription services and pay only for those that they want to watch on iOS and tvOS.

During its March event, Apple said that users would be able to sign up to CBS All Access as an a la carte subscription option in the new TV app, but the service wasn't included when it launched with iOS 12.

However, CBS All Access on Thursday quietly announced via its Twitter account that it will arrive on Apple TV Channels from July 29.

Hi! Thank you again for your interest! We wanted to update you and let you know that the CBS All Access Channel will launch on Apple TV Channels on 7/29! Happy streaming! 😊 - CBS All Access Help (@cbsaahelp) July 25, 2019

Other subscription services available now through Apple TV Channels include Cinemax, EPIX, HBO, MTV Hits, Showtime, Smithsonian, Starz and Tastemade. Upcoming services include Nickelodeon, Mubi, The History Channel Vault, Comedy Central Now, and more.

Users can subscribe to the channels à la carte within the TV app and then watch them there, without having to jump between apps, sign into a new account, or enter another password.

Good. With Netflix price rise and the forthcoming arrival of Apple TV+ I might ditch Netflix and choose a CBS All Access + Apple TV+ combo. Curious to see Apple TV+ price.

How is this any different or better than installing the CBS app on my tv and subscribing directly thru CBS?

I feel like there’s a benefit to this but I’m not understanding what that is.

The "benefit" is that everything is managed inside one app (Apple TV app) and the subscription goes through Apple taking the money from you Apple ID account's credit or card.

I've read that it's possible to share access to Apple TV Channels with up to six family members and that it's possible to download shows for offline viewing.

The price actually is the same and if CBS app offers downloading then even the offered features are the same.

It’s already in my Channels.

Weird - I don't have it in my feed yet. I do have "History Vault" which is new.

As an aside, I've been wondering how Apple chooses the order of the channels from left to right - is it by popularity? How much the company pays to have it highlighted? Apple's own discretion? Do the other companies make agreements about positioning before allowing their service to join?

For a while HBO was the first channel, with Showtime, Starz, and Cinemax following, so I assumed it was graded based on popularity (or possibly price), but now Epix has inexplicably moved to the first position behind HBO, despite it being cheaper, and less popular than HBO.

Does Apple add a fee for the “benefit”?

So basically every company will have some service that allows you to subscribe to other services lol?

So on Amazon Prime, I can add HBO, CBS, etc, but not Apple, I have to use a separate app.

On Apple, I can add HBO, CBS, etc, but not Amazon. I have to install a separate app.

I prefer the old model of having separate apps for each service, and having the OS parse/recommend. Ala Roku.

Don't think so. I can't check because CBS All Access Channel hasn't appeared yet on my iPhone. ipedro posted a screenshot showing he already has access to it.

If it's like Amazon Prime Channels (very likely) the price offered is the same: $ 5.99/month for Limited Commercials or $9.99/month for Commercial Free. The same prices as stand alone CBS app.

Just to complete: for the final user is the same, for CBS maybe it's different. Apple probably gets a cut for every subscription passing through Apple TV app.

Yes. Note, though, that the Apple TV app is aware of Amazon Prime content. So while Amazon is not fully integrated, you can search for Amazon content in the TV app, add it to your watchlist, and then play it in the Amazon app with one click.

The TV app is far from perfect at the moment, but it's slowly getting to the point where you can have most streaming content easily accessible from one app, which helps dealing with the increasing fragmentation of streaming services.

In some cases the TV app also has added value compared to the individual apps (e.g. you can download up to 5 movies for offline viewing from HBO on iOS devices for long flights etc., which is not possible using the HBO Now/Go apps).

So far the subscription prices for channels are the same as subscribing to the services indivicually. Hopefully that'll be the case for CBS All Access too, and hopefully it'll be the commercial-free version.

I never thought I would sign up for this but they got me with Picard.

Same here, but they got me with Strange Angel and The Twilight Zone reboot (although I just canceled my subscription since season 2 of Strange Angel just ended).

Weird, this is about CBS, why is there an image for Spider-Man? Just a nitpick. With that said.

It's funny reading these comments, people complained about Cable and having all these channels they didn't watch and how they want ala cart. Cable gives them ala cart and people are still complaining and what's even more annoying, people acting like they HAVE to subscribed to every single service. Which only means they are paying for a bunch of stuff you don't need. So you are right back to paying for a bunch of stuff you don't watch and don't have the time to watch. It's not these services faults you all act like entitled whiners who want access to EVERYTHING for little to no cost at all.

I also love the comments about people being proud of being a thief. "Well, I can't get what I want, how I want it, for the cost I want so I'll just steal it." Again you aren't ENTITLED to anything. People claiming this will drive them to stealing whatever they want are already pirating. Grow up and learn to make some decisions. In the real world, we have to make choices. Here at least you can watch the 2 or 3 shows you want, cancel, move on to another service and watch those shows. I don't see what the big deal is.

Also I prefer yearly subs. So I wish these services offered that. I look at like this, back in the day I used to buy TV Box Sets, those things were $60 a piece. Now you can subscribe to some of these services for $70 a year and get everything. For example the Star Trek Series Box Set used to be $100 a season. Now you get CBS All Access for $64 a year and you get the entire Trek Universe. That's a good deal IMHO.

Apparently CBS All Access is available in Canada as well... which seems odd.

Other than that Apple TV Channels is pretty useless in Canada... there is only Smithsonian, Acorn TV. There are no actual Canadian networks.

It’s $5.99 here in Canada.

...the catch is that here in Canada, Star Trek is licensed to Space and it doesn’t appear to be available on CBS All Access.

I forgot all about the Twilight Zone reboot.

Disney+ is going to offer an annual cost that is about $14 cheaper than if you paid monthly.

I'm not convinced Disney+ will really be worth buying until 2021 then you'll at least have a few new shows to watch. They are trickling stuff out at a snails pace. Mandalorian this fall. Next fall Winter Soldier and that's it so far and I already own all the Disney and Marvel movies. But, I'll probably just get the yrly plan and call it a day. :)

Confirmed that CBS All Access in Canada is missing Star Trek (licensed to Space in Canada). That includes Discovery and Picard as well as the back catalogue.

For this price, I’d consider subscribing for the Star Trek catalogue, past and present, and the late talk shows but not if it’s missing their flagship shows. Big Bang Theory is also missing. Other new shows that I’d watch like Magnum PI or old shows I’d binge on like Cheers are missing in Canada. Even The Grammy’s isn’t available on CBS All Access.

Yeah, it’s totally sucked dry in Canada due to prior licensing deals. Not worth the subscription. I’m guessing that once streaming takes off in the coming year, content producers are going to end their relationships with cable companies and just stream their content on their own services.

So instead of going to one app (CBS All Access) I would go to the TV app instead.

GROUNDBREAKING!!!! WOW!!!!

We have to subscribe to CBS each summer for Big Brother but this might be the last year. Something annoying is happening this year with the CBS app, however, EACH and EVERY time I go into the CBS app it has me sign in. It wont save it for whatever reason. Its almost like Apple wants us to switch to the TV app after July 29th. Hmm, interesting.

I feel like we reached the pinnacle with early streaming Netflix as an aggregator. Sure, there’s an overwhelming amount of good content now, but it’s segmented into madness.

Yeah. The “free” ride is almost over. I remember when all I paid was $7 bucks a month for Netflix which covered almost all of my TV needs. I always had a show to watch and could always find an interesting movie, if not a specific one I wanted to watch on demand.

Soon, we’ll be paying between $20-$50 bucks for a half dozen streaming services. Better than what we paid for cable at its monopolistic peak and with better control of subscriptions, but the cheap TV days are over if there are shows you want to watch that are spread over multiple services.

I’ll probably get AppleTV+, Disney+, Crave and Netflix during Stranger Things and Black Mirror binges.

The good thing is you can pick up the service and then drop it. So pay for it for a few months while your show(s) are out and then drop it until the following year. This is what we have done with CBS for the past few years, only subscribing during the summer. I also wait for a decent Raise(dot)com sale and pick up streaming gift cards at a discount, usually 15-20% off. We currently keep Netflix and Hulu year round so when I see a good deal, I just pick one up and add it to the account balance.
