High Key to Hades
My iBook CDR/DVD Combo is proving unbelievably inconsistent when burning AIFF music CDs in iTunes, frequently spitting out a half-burned disc with an error code -7932. The Apple care phone helpline told me it was a software problem and that I was outside the 90 day software guarantee period. They won't admit a hardware problem, and insist that the problem occurs because iTunes doesn't support burning at speeds in excess of 4x (if it's true this is a bit pathetic when iTunes CD burning preferences go up to 24x). They have offered no further help for this despite stinging me for a single-incident care pack.

The problem is that the problem occurs at 4x as well, and has now even occurred at only 2x.

The built-in CD burner (a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2002) is starting to look like little more than a sales gimmick, and the iBook's CD-burning capabilities are looking like no more than a well-hyped piece of puffery. This machine doesn't fulfill the expectations which Apple's advertising raises, and I'm even considering exploring the possibility of getting a refund under the sale of goods act. This machine doesn't reliably do what Apple claim in this area, and is thus not of merchandable quality.

The tragedy is that apart from this, the iBook is about the best bit of technology I've purchased (the 10 gB iPod runs close) but Apple's attitude to its customers sucks nowadays. When I had a problem with an old Zip drive Iomega sent me a new one at the drop of a hat, and couldn't do enough to solve my problem - like Apple used to be in the old days. (I had a Powerbook 5300 which Apple repaired free of charge outside warranty and bent over backwards to ensure that I was happy).
