The drive is not reading cd's, or dvd's.

Is there a utility for checking to see what could be wrong?

Thank you.

Did it fail all of a sudden or did it get progressively worse? I have had some where the laser gets dirty over time and it gets more and more erratic. Cleaning the laser usually restores it. But it does require disassembly and opening the DVD drive so I would only suggest that if it is out of warranty.

First time I have attempted to burn a cd.
Being prompted with; "This disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power for the media."
Was trying to burn a Word Doc.

This is an older model MBP

So "older" means out of warranty then? If you are comfortable working with small screws and can work in a static free environment then you could consider cleaning the laser. There are some good disassembly guides at ifixit.com to get things apart. Or if you can find a decent repair shop familiar with MacBooks then they could do it for you.
