Just a quick question about the superdrive in my new refurb 17" MBP: When I insert a CD in the drive, it won't grab it to pull it in until there is only 1/4" sticking out. Is this normal?

Yea, that is correct. The Drives that Apple Started using in 2002 started doing this, whereas the earlier slot loading drives started pulling the disc in after about 1/2" was inserted. The earlier drives did it to support the 3" discs, instead of only allowing the 5" discs that the new ones do. With any luck, the next major revision to the MacBook/Pro line will return to the older style, or use the same type of mechanism that the Wii use.

Totally normal, exactly as it was designed.

Also, the whirring, clicking, thunking sounds are often disconcerting to new Mac users. A friend of mine thought hers was broken! "Nope", I said, "that is normal". If only they could make it more elegant sounding...

Yeah, I was freaked out the first time. I thought it was broken because of the noise and because it seemed like it wasn't taking it. But I'm used to it now :)
