cd writer not recognized

Have iMac OS 8.6 ,CD writer (toast 5), Canon Digital camera ixus v3.After installing canon software,when I plug in usb cable from cd writer I get following message-The software needed to use USB device "USB Storage Adapter"cannot be found .Please refer to device documentation to install necessary software.This happens even though appropriate cd writer software has been installed and it does't matter where I plug usb cable from cd writer into be it keyboard or directly into iMac.

I would recommmend upgrading to 9.2...For improved compability...

can't upgrade,machine not fast enough

Then I would recommend buying an iBook or eMac (used if you need to save money).
