I have heard that apple released a CDMA version of the i4 only available in china. Is there any truth to that? If so are there any entrepreneurs in China selling them on the web?

An unlocked iPhone4 that works on Verizon would be a nice Christmas gift to myself! Haha

No there is not. There have been a few rumors that the CDMA iPhone is only for China, but that is unlikely as Verizon is the largest CDMA network. But as of now there is no CDMA iPhone anywhere.

the technology used in china is referred to as a type of CDMA (not sure what exactly it is called), but it is more similar to GSM than to the CDMA we have here, and it is included in the radios already in the iPhone

None in China yet, but China's CDMA network is way larger than Verizon in terms of customers. I can't remember the exact number but it's way over the 92 mil that Verizon has.

That's completely false. I've used my CDMA phones in China before.

Edit: you're speaking of China Mobile which uses TD-SCDMA for a small portion of it's network (17M subscribers). China Unicom, the largest CDMA carrier in China uses the same CDMA tech the rest of the world uses.

Also untrue. They are almost identical in subscribers counts last time I checked. However, the China network was well on the way to overtaking Verizon in size.

Edit: China Telecom announced 85M subscribers as of the end of October. Verizon stands at around 93M.

Interesting note, CDMA is growing faster in China than GSM.

You've heard wrong.

Valid point, I was talking about the provider I remember reading about a conversation before, in which I learned that they called it CDMA but that it actually wasn't CDMA...I forgot to include the fact that there is a true CDMA network in China that doesn't currently offer the iPhone

there are 3 government owned carriers in China

China unicom is selling iphone now. Its iphone is identical to what you buy in America, wifi was missing but not anymore. They call their network WCDMA
China telecom is another carrier which is running the same network as Verizon. I think they call it CDMA2000

China telecom is supposed to be negotiating with Apple. Apple has to produce a new type of iphone to make it work. If it works for China telecom, it should also works for Verizon.

China mobile is yet another carrier, which also has interest in iphone.

China telecom's network(CDMA20000) was run by China unicom before China unicom gave it to China telcom. I guess that is why you find confusing information from internet.
