cell phone direct modem connection

I am aware of Bluetooth options, but what about a direct connection to a cell phone?

I have a startac motorola cell phone, and an adapter that ends in an analog regular old telephone jack.

OS X wont dial it tho, and if I dial manually, doesn't seem to negotiate the phone correctly. I can hear the modem sounds, but then an odd couple of sounds and it disconnects.

Any suggestions?
