Hello. Can someone tell me why I’m getting this pop up? It only happens with photos up to a certain date and then the other photos it doesn’t happen. Anything 2022 and earlier I’m getting this. Is there a reason I should or shouldn’t have “cellular data” ON for photos? Maybe I turned it off at some point? I’m wondering why this only happens with older photos. Thank you!!

If your cellular data is limited and you don’t want to go over your limit

Older photos might be only on iCloud. When you click the photo, it wants to download the actual image instead of the thumbnail.

If I have unlimited data, should I turn on the cellular data for photos and leave it on? Does that setting effect sending those older pics and videos to people? Thanks so much for the response.

I would if you want to look at your photos away from WiFi. There’s no downside other than using data and letting you look at them away from WiFi.

I’m not sure about sending but I suspect if it’s off it wouldn’t be able to download the photo to send it. That’s my guess so someone correct me if I’m wrong

Yep, that popup means the full-resolution versions of your older photos are stored in iCloud and need to be downloaded. If “Cellular Data for Photos” is off, your phone won’t download them unless you’re on Wi-Fi.

If you have unlimited data, it’s totally fine to keep it on — especially if you want access to all your photos anytime or need to send them while away from Wi-Fi.
