Hi, and sorry for the noob question~
I've had an Air 2 for a while and have decided to activate the cellullar on it (I used to borrow my office's hotspot, but they're getting rid of them). I know that if you don't activate on Verizon first, you can never use that tablet for Verizon thereafter, so I'm going to activate on Verizon sim first.
My question is, there's two options - data, at $20 2gigs/month, which has the $10 line access fee plus $40 "activation fee", and prepaid, which is $20 for 1 gig/month, no other fees.
a) Do I need to do the data plan (since it mentions "activation fee") in order to register the Sim/iPad with Verizon, or will "prepaid" work just as well? I was thinking of getting prepaid my first month or two, to see what my real usage is. When at home, I have wifi at work and home....I do travel a lot every month, but try to find free wifi when I can. Some months (winter) I don't travel much or at all.
It does irritate me that the data plan, even with the line access fee, is cheaper than the prepaid plan for more gigs of usage.
If I sign up for Verizon's prepaid, though, and then take the Sim out and put the Apple Sim in and try Tmobile, will the Verizon Sim still work/the iPad still be Verizon "activated" when I insert it again?
b) If I choose the prepaid plan, can I still use the iPad as a hotspot for my laptop, or does that only work on the data plan?
c) Is the data plan easy to cancel? If I cancel, does that deactivate the Sim, from what I've read?
d) I don't currently have a smartphone (my calling needs are minimal, I'm mostly on email/internet, and I have a Tracfone). For now, it seemed the cheapest thing to do was keep my Tracfone (although it's out of SMS storage, low on battery, and so I should upgrade it anyway) while getting the cheapest data or prepaid plan on my iPad, which I would use as a hotspot. Buying an actual hotspot from Verizon is expensive at $50/month. If I'm going to spend $50 a month, I may as well buy an iPhone and use it as a hot spot.
So an iphone may be in my future, and I want to be able to cancel the tablet plan easily (and add the tablet to my phone plan).
Sorry for the long post/ possibly stupid questions. I've been out of the cellular/Verizon loop for years.
