So I decided to switch to the dedicated gmail app on my iphone and turn off the stock mail app.

Went out for a run, so watch was cellular only without my phone and to my surprise gmail app notifications were coming through?

I know I can’t see the whole message, but I thought that notifications when on cellular are dependent on there being a dedicated Apple Watch app, when this isn’t the case?

Has anyone else experienced this, or is this expected behaviour for all app notifications regardless of whether they have a dedicated watch app or not?

Expected behavior. You can only interact with beyond the notification screen if it has a dedicated watch app, but you will receive all the same push notifications that your phone does.

Pretty unacceptable that after all these years so many popular apps still haven't made a dedicated watch app...

Even worse, we’ve had apps developed that were given up on. I miss being able to summon an Uber from my Watch. Used to be able to have a night out without needing my phone.

I’ve heard WatchOS development is still fairly difficult compared to iOS.
