Currently we are looking into centralizing our authentication here at our school. I am looking into a OpenLDAP/Kerberos/Samba/Mail solution for login/file shares for about 1,200 lab computers and 10,000 students. While currently I am looking into knitting this together from open source projects (openldap Kerberos (mit) Samba 3.0, postfix), and while this is certainly do-able, my staff is small and already stretched thin. It looks like apple has already done a lot of the grunt work, and slapped a nice interface on it (from what I can see from the pictures). I was wondering if anybody has taken advantage of Open Directory 2 and what are your experiences with it. I would be buying the apple servers initially as solely Directory servers, as I would like to leverage my existing infrastructure of Intel (running gentoo linux) to bare the brunt of the file services and print services hits. But that doesnt seem like that should be a problem. The client machines are almost completely windows XP boxen, with a few Mac (yay!) and some older 98 stuff that should be gotten rid of soon (though I said that last year).
Well also be looking into a pay-for-print (one of the main reasons for the push to have them login), so if anybody happens to have some experience with this area, that would be helpful as well.
Thanks for your time.
One last thing, if you know of a good place I could go and ask these questions please let me know!
