CES 2021 will be an all-digital experience, following a decision made by the Consumer Technology Association amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the United States. Taking place from January 6-9, 2021, the show will let companies showcase new products and other tech news through live streaming video feeds.

"Amid the pandemic and growing global health concerns about the spread of COVID-19, it's just not possible to safely convene tens of thousands of people in Las Vegas in early January 2021 to meet and do business in person,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA.

“Technology helps us all work, learn and connect during the pandemic – and that innovation will also help us reimagine CES 2021 and bring together the tech community in a meaningful way. By shifting to an all-digital platform for 2021, we can deliver a unique experience that helps our exhibitors connect with existing and new audiences."

CTA said that it plans to reveal more information about CES 2021 as the event gets closer. The association also noted that it plans to return to its typical in-person conference in Las Vegas for CES 2022, where it will "combine the best elements of a physical and digital show."

While Apple typically doesn't attend CES, in 2020 the company did make an appearance to showcase its HomeKit platform. Otherwise, many Apple accessory companies do attend the show and introduce new products each year.

Sad state of the times we live in.

Being able to see products in person is the whole point of CES, not to mention the invaluable face-to-face discussions, impromptu meetings and deals cut every year (think hotel bar and dinner meetings).

Obviously with COVID-19 there is little choice but to have a virtual CES, which is better than nothing, but it will be a flop and not nearly the kind of beneficial meeting where everyone is face-to-face.

Not surprising at all. Tradeshow industry is dead for at least a couple years. Really sucks for all those involved in it, though many did absolutely take every penny they could for years. I always loved paying $2000 for security at your booth for the week.... when the only people inside at night are the security guards. You had to pay them to not steal from your booth.

As the saying goes, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" and Covid-19 can stay there! No thanks to milling around with thousands of people from around the world all packed into a convention center INDOORS! Yikes!

Nice! My brother has invitations, but I never wanted to spend days wandering the floor. Done right virtual could be better.

What are the tech YouTubers going to do then? Video reactions to product reveals?
Actually that is a good medium to utilize for hundreds of demos, discussions, and reaction/reviews. All the last CES keynotes from manufactures was available on YouTube. The vendors don't have to be in Las Vegas to create these. Perhaps it allows smaller booth vendors equal footing, instead of some large vendor dominating. The show has lost a lot of its charm as it changed into more of a expo than trade show because of price increases to participate there.

Aside from that CES is no longer a show where a lot of consumer announcements occur. If you are into home theater, automated homes, you have a Digital CEDIA in Sept. (Their 2020 Hall is being used as a COVID 19 treatment center)

The show of shows this year is IFA Berlin 2020 (Sept 3 - 5) for product revels for a lot of the products you are interested it.

You cant be serious lol?
Is it really so hard to believe I could be serious when I say that people who have a sickness or who are scared of catching a sickness should not go to a big public event with lots of other people? That's how we used to do it back in the olden days of 2019. Worked pretty good too.

So youre saying, if for some stupid reason a person is “not affraid of the big bad coronavirus” they should be able to go, mingle with the thousands of other idiots, then come back home, spread it at home and in their community/work?

Rather than watching it online...

Yes, and anyone stupid enough to stay around them after they've done this horrific act of going out in public in a free country should be prepared to also get this horrible big bad disease that's barely worse than the common cold for most people.

You must sleep well at night since you appear to be one of the people who dont care for, and wouldnt prevent the spreading of the disease. Keep it up :)

I isolated at home like everyone else (not by choice btw just in case you were about to think I might actually have a redeeming quality; everything I had the desire to go to shut down so home was the only place I wanted to be) and got it anyway. It wasn't near as bad as most other illnesses I've had throughout my life and none of them caused a worldwide panic. Now that I'm immune at least for the time being (according to preliminary studies), then yes I do sleep well at night even with the knowledge that *gasp* I go out in public again. But I would sleep much better if we weren't all being lied to by the media and the "scientists" who are clearly using this virus for a very specific and insidious agenda.
