Lutron today announced the launch of new Caséta Smart Shades that are able to integrate with HomeKit and other smart home platforms. Priced at $399, the Caséta shades can be controlled using schedules, in-wall controls, remotes, the Lutron app, the Home app, or Siri voice commands.

These are the first smart shades that are available under the Caséta brand, and they are more affordable than Lutron's prior smart shade options. Lutron says that the Caséta shades have been designed to move quietly in near-perfect unison and have been tested to perform for more than 10 years.

Caséta Smart Shades can be used with Caséta lights and smart switches to control natural light alongside light from lamps and overhead fixtures. The shades come in roller or honeycomb styles and can be purchased in white or gray.

All shades up to 48 inches wide and 80 inches high are $399, with larger custom sizes in widths up to 96 inches and lengths up to 104 inches are available at an extra cost. There's also an option to add blackout functionality for an additional $30.

The Caséta Smart Shades will begin shipping in February 2025.

Come on Lutron, is this really the best you can do?

Caseta is, IMHO, the finest set of switches and dimmers available for HK but plugs seem to be a glaring hole in their offerings.
Caséta is specifically a smart lighting brand, not a full-on home automation brand. Why should they diverge from what they do so well? That's just a recipe for loss of focus (and of quality) across the line.

Plenty of good plugs out there with no issues.

What?

They already make a plug, it is hideous, I am only asking for an updated version.

This very article, highlighting shades, is them diverging from what they do so well!

Confused because I have a bunch of casera shades that I can control with HomeKit. Had them for 5+ years.

Agree on plugs. Need a cheaper outdoor one and a more versatile indoor one.

I think we are just about to the level of tech in Sarah (the smart house) on the show Eureka. I can totally get behind this and more vendors branching out into new products - the better it is for us consumers.

That plug is meant specifically to be used with lamps, for lighting. It even says in the instructions: "Use only with dimmable LED, dimmable CFL, halogen, or incandescent lamps."

Those shades are the Serena line. They are not Caseta, though they do integrate with Caseta.

but you control them using a Lutron hub, right?

Given how unreliable Homekit is you are probably better off with the older style shade with a hub. When Homekit commands do not work (happens a lot for me with one window) I can fall back to the Lutron app or the wall switch. I have one window named “window left” with Lutron shades. When I say "Siri, lower window left" Siri fails constantly with:

“Which room?” Then Siri lists all my rooms except the one with “left window” I say “everywhere” nothing happens.

Works with watch when doesn’t with HomePod, or with wall switch or app when neither of those work

“None of your accessories can do that”

“I can’t do combined Siri requests”

“Now playing set fire by Adele”

Raises in increments of 25% even though I did not specify any increments

“There was a problem adjusting volume”

“Media will play softer”

or she just ignores me completely

EDITED to provide some clairifications

Putting multiple D (C?) cell batteries in a blazing hot window? (watch the video) Gee, what could go wrong.
Hmmm. Good point. I had a good idea where these could go in my house, but it gets hot in summer afternoon sun.

I hate D-cell batteries. I believe they are a scam.

They're so big, and they can be filled OR NOT FILLED with electrolyte. There's way too much opportunity for scams. The manufacturer can put half the electrolyte in them and fill them with lead weight to make them feel like they're real D-cell batteries. But half the batteries you find are super light. They DON'T have the full capacity expected from D-cell batteries of days gone by.

The Caseta brand is top-notch. I have many Caseta light switches throughout my home, and they are great. I even have one for an outdoor porch fan.

And here's one sweet bonus with Caseta: You no longer have to mess with 3-way switches. I was able to wire a 3-way switch closed at one end and replace the switch with a battery-powered switch. At the other end, I have the standard Caseta switch (on and off) and at the modified end, it's just an on-off caseta remote that has been installed in that electrical box, with the tied-off wires tucked into the box behind the remote. Once you install the remote and the lightswitch cover plate, it looks and acts just like any other lightswitch in the house. It's going on 2 years now, it gets used dozens of times each day, and the CR 2032 battery has not yet needed to be replaced.

Another cool thing about these Caseta remotes is that you can install one ANYWHERE you would like another light switch. You don't even need to cut a hole in the wall or install a box. Just screw the remote's mounting frame directly into the drywall, then screw a light-switch surround plate into it, pair the remote to the main switch, and boom; now you have a switch WHERE YOU NEED IT and you don't have to walk halfway through the house just to turn on some lights in the dining area.

The only caution I would offer is that if you're installing a "fake switch", you want it to look just like the real switches in your house. So be sure to measure the correct height off the floor (so the fake switch is level with all the other switches in the house), and measure too from the edge of the door jamb or corner of the wall, so that it's not too close to the edge of the room. Match your plates to whatever else you have in the room, and even YOU will forget that the switch isn't real!

Wonderful devices. Expensive as hell, but worth every penny, and always cheaper than having an electrician run new wire through the attic or under the house.

Highly recommended. I look forward to seeing what Caseta has planned for horizontal or vertical blinds. For those, I'd be willing to run electricity through the walls. The brand is THAT GOOD.

I'm looking forward to the day when I have smart blinds in my home, but I'll have to wait until the price comes down and they can be wired into the electrical. Having to change batteries periodically is very unappealing to me.

But, come on, it’s exactly the same technology: Turning electricity off and on

It’s much less of a diversion of focus than Apple Computer Inc. making a music player or a phone, Google making self-driving cars, or Facebook doing VR.
