I have a 2018 MBP running Big Sur, connected to a 32in BenQ external monitor. I also have a 2009 27in iMac that I rarely use, although it's almost still as snappy as the day I got it - especially since I installed an SSD a year or so ago. I rarely used to be sat at my home office desk, hence no need to upgrade it since I was predominantly using an MBP.

Recent events with Covid-19 meant I am now working almost entirely from home, and this is why I bought the BenQ. However, I thought it daft to have the iMac sitting and doing nothing, so I bought another cable to connect it to my laptop, and it works great. The resolution is still acceptable for what I use it for, and it's nice having even more SRE.

However, the iMac's brightness seems to always be on full, no matter what key combination I try and even what setting I set that brightness to when using the iMac itself to change. Even if I turn it right down in Sys Pref, it still displays full brightness when connected back to the MBP. I don't know if partly this is down to me using the BenQ rather than having the MBP open (it's closed, and stored in a dock to keep the air flow up) and using the Touch Bar, but does anyone have any suggestions on how this could work so that I can control that iMac brightness? I've also tried a couple of little apps that are supposed to work around this, but unless I was doing something wrong I couldn't get them to work.

Cheers

Hi,

You could have a look at Lunar (lunar.fyi). It lets you either sync brightness between main and external monitors or manage it separately.
