I'd like the default look of textedit to look like terminal's "homebrew" look (black, green text, semi-transparent). Any ideas how to do this?

Hiding the ruler and editing menus (styles, alignment, spacing, lists) would be pretty cool, too.

You can chage the font and background color but cannot make it transparent, i think.

To do it, open TextEdit and press cmd+T and pick up your colors.

Also you can remove the top menu with cmd+R.

Hope those infos will help you.

i mean changing the defaults themselves so that text edit looks like the homebrew skin every time i open textedit. The only default edit i can find is just the font in preferences
