Hey there, I have recently purchased the new alu macbook, upgraded from the older white macbook...

One feature I used to use a lot on the older macbook was the F11 button to 'show desktop'. (along with F9, F10 and F12 all controlling other exposé features).

However, on the new macbook, the 'F' keys have been altered, with the dvd and volume controls now taking their spot, and now you must press fn+F11 to access the show desktop feature...highly annoying in my opinion, as it now makes this a two-handed operation, instead of one.

My question is how do I alter the 'F' keys to 'show desktop', without the need to hold fn button as well?

I tried doing it in keyboard shortcuts inside system preferences, but it would only allow me to change them with fn.

The F3 and F4 keys now act as exposé and dashboard keys, leaving F5 and F6 'free' so ideally I would like to use one of them for show desktop.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Also have a look at "System Preferences" -> "Keyboard & Mouse" to get rid of the need to hold down the function key.

i have already tried in system preferences under both exposé and keyboard shortcuts but cannot seem to find a way to disable the need for the fn button.

can anyone show me exactly where it is, or any alternative?

thanks.

In System Preferences, in Keyboard and Mouse, under the Keyboard tab is a checkbox that says "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". Make sure that is not checked.

You should try using the 4 finger swipes. Swipe up to Show Desktop and swipe down to show Expose. ;)

thanks for getting back to me everyone who did.

that option was already unchecked for me. checking it will then take away the volume keys F10, F11 and F12 keys, which is not what i wanted to do.

is there any way to keep the box option unchecked and just assign the F5 key to show desktop?

thanks also for the 4 finger thing...didn't know about that, very cool :)
