OK, but I'd like Gmail to show my address without the dot.

Not sure exactly what you mean here; you can just leave out the dot when you give the address to people and/or sign up for services. As already posted above, the dot is purely aesthetic and is ignored by the email server.

f.i.r.s.t.n.a.m.e.l.a.s.t.n.a.m.e@gmail.com is the same as firstnamelastname@gmail.com.

From Gmail Help Center:

I want to add or remove dots from my username.

If you'd like to use a version of your username with fewer or more dots (.), you don't have to change a thing. If your username is 'my.address@gmail.com,' messages sent to 'myaddress@gmail.com' and 'm.y.a.d.d.r.e.s.s@gmail.com' are already delivered to your Inbox.

I want to change my email address.

If you want to do something like change your email address from hikingfan@gmail.com to bakescakes@gmail.com, you’ll need to sign up for a new address.

After signing up for a new address, you can transfer everything from your old address to make the transition easier.

But since firstname.lastname@gmail.com is the same as firstnamelastname@gmail.com, if you have one, I doubt you'd be able to sign up for the other. I think the OP is stuck.
