OK, I have been googling this for a while now, and cannot figure it out. I want to change the icon from the actual harddrive looking icon, to what I actually own, a black macbook. Can someone please help me on this one...

i assume you have the black macbook icon already?

if so, ctrl click on the blackMB icon, go to "get info".
click on the icon and press command+c to copy.

ctrl click on the harddrive icon(that you want to replace), go to "get info",
select the old drive icon and press command+v to replace the icon

Thank you for the know how... now just need to get the macbook icon. Any ideas??

yes, candybar will allow you to change any icon you want... but if you just want to do the hard drive then its just as easy as "get info" and copy paste..

Thanks everyone for the tips! Here is a shot of the desktop now... So much better without that ugly harddrive icon!

Hey everyone I am trying to do this again, I already replaced the HD icon once before with a BlackBook picture but I found a better one and following the steps is not working

I already know how to do this, and it is not working.

I get info on the picture I want, click the small picture, it gets a blue border, I click copy

I go to the HD icon I want to replace, get info, click the small picture and when it gets a little blue border around it click paste and it does nothing.

And, my old BB HD icon has reset to the original and I can't change it. Help?

This doesn't seem to be working for me. I tried to copy the icon from "get info" and paste it in the HD "get info" screen but it will not work. What am I messing?

**Nevermind, I was clicking in the wrong area.**

^^

Can you tell me what you did when it worked? Because I can't figure it out. Very odd since I have done this countless times before.

Click the one you want to copy in get info so it has the blue border.

Then do command-c.

Click the one you want to replace in get info so it has a blue border.

Then do command-v.

It should work.

Check the Permissions settings inside the Get Info window for the one you are trying to change. It sounds like you might not have permissions to change it. Otherwise, it should work.

I was able to get this to work on my iMac but am now having trouble with my mini. I needed to change perms on the HD for the iMac but none of this is working on the mini. It is very weird. I've tried different icons and all. I can only use .png files correct?

Yup, this is what I have been doing. It does not work. Exactly those steps.

the Macintosh HD says I have read/write permissions. I also clicked the little lock, typed in my password and then tried it again. Still does not work.

unlock. under Sharing & Permissions, select "Read & Write" for "everyone". that should do it.

Doesn't work for me either. It seems I can copy (from 'edit' 'copy') but can't paste. I have 'read & write' selected for everything.

changing hard drive icon

If you repair disk permissions, using disk utility (utilities folder) then it will work....
