Change location of iPhoto/iMovie events?

Hi,

I am quickly running out of hard drive space on my internal mac drive and would like to relocate my movies and photos created in iLife 08 to a location on an external drive I have purchased. I have been looking at the preferences but am unable to find a setting which would allow me to change my default location for my files? This is my first MAC so maybe I am missing something basic?
