Change Network Name

My Macbook Pro is called "unknown" on my home network with some random numbers after it. Is there a way of calling it something else?

My wife's PC that is on the same network is called what she called her laptop "Kim's laptop"

So why does my Macbook not show up as " Matt's Macbook Pro " ?

Open System Preferences->Sharing and at the top of the pane set the Mac's share name.

yeah thats been set as Matts Macbook from day one but still shows up as " unknown - (then the airport id number) " on my network.
