Question for the techs in the audience.

I have a 2012 MBA (i5,1.8,4GB). Could I buy a 2012 i7,2.0,8GB logic board and swap that into my Macbook Air? Is there a technical reason why I couldn't do that? Does the serial number follow the software or does it follow the logic board, or some other part?

I really want to upgrade the RAM basically, due to my usage of VMs, and since I can't add any more RAM, I wonder if I could just swap the logic board.

It's probably easier for me to tell the laptop and buy another one with the specs I want, but I was just curious as to whether it was possible, and whether any one here has done just that.

Yep it'll be possible, and yes it will be far easier and less likely to end in disaster if you just sold it and bought another one.

I am more curious about how much besides the motherboard has changed since 2012. Would it be possible to fit a 2013-2015 motherboard into a 2012 model.

It would be possible and yes there are some people have done it. You can refer to think LINK. However there are some slight changes on MBA before 2013 such as the microphone. You will have to make your research about that.
