I've set up my Apple TV 4 in the following way: Apple TV > receiver > TV / speakers. This is to allow me to AirPlay music to the Apple TV while the TV is off.

The Apple TV has a great feature where you can set the volume buttons of the Apple TV remote to use the IR signals that control the receiver's volume. However, when you use AirPlay and change the volume on your phone, you control the Apple TV's volume instead of the receiver's. Is it possible to to control the receiver's volume via your phone as well?

When the Siri remote is changing the volume on your receiver it's using IR just as you're receiver remote would. This does not exist on the iPhone. So no. Sorry you're out of luck.

So the only way you can control the receiver's volume via AirPlay is if you have AirPlay built into the receiver?
