change sync settings

My default sync setting for Contacts seems to be "replace." How do I change the settings in iTunes to merge contact info from my iPhone 3GS to my iMac? Last time I did a sync all my contacts on my iMac were overwritten (and lost) by my phone's contact list. Thanks for any help!
