How did you format the drive ?

If it was Fat32 you can change it normal way, if it was NTFS you cant modify it unless you use a workaround - which may not work either...

If you want, you can always hide the drive from your desktop very simply. Go into windows, and my computer. Select C and rename it. Call it .windows (important to put the . in there) and when you go back to osx it will be hidden from your desktop

Edit: I should have followed the links in the second post above earlier, where I would have found exactly the same instructions as in the link I posted here. Doh.
