This is something that's always bothered me, but I've never been able to figure out how to fix it. With my MBP's high-resolution antiglare screen, there's no option to select 1440x900. There's no 1440 resolution listed at all in system preferences, just 1680x1050 and 1280x800. In games and other applications, it goes to 1440x852, which looks goofy.

I've tried using SwitchResX to add it manually, but there's something I'm missing because when I try to create it, it goes to a black screen, requiring me to boot into safe mode to get everything back the way it was.

Is there some way I can add support for 1440x900 in terminal or can someone walk me through the exact steps in SwitchResX? I don't use my desktop at that resolution, but for gaming, it provides a nice balance between performance and visual quality.
