Changing an Apple ID?

This problem is going to be a little different, than a straight and simple id change. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm trying to help an older uncle update and back up is iPhone 3gs. (it's never been hooked up to a computer since the day he got it) While looking at his phone the other day, I noticed his Apple ID is actually a made up email address. He didn't have an email address when he bought the phone so he just made one up. He also no longer seems to remember the password I have since gotten him a legit email. And would like to change is phone over to that. And start backing it up. He has over 800 contacts. So saving those is the most important thing. He only has a few free apps so no worries there. Any ideas.

Give Apple a call or take it into the wireless store.

will ask you for the id and some security questions to reset the password.
Once you get logged in you can then change to a legit email address.
