Changing carriers for iPhone 4S

Planning to switch from AT&T to Verizon for the 4S. Can I purchase the phone on Apple.com, then inform Verizon what data plan I want? Or must I purchase from the Verizon site and set up a new account. Additional complication: I have an employee discount with Verizon. Does this mean I should definitely purchase on the Verizon site and not Apple.com? Thanks for your help.

I don't know the answer to your question, but wanted to point out that I'm pretty sure you can't do the pre-order in your scenario - in case that is what you were planning to do. You have to already be a customer of the carrier to do the pre-order.

So, I think your best bet will be next Friday when the 4S is available for purchase, to set up your new Verizon account through Verizon and get your discounts squared away directly with them.
