Is there a way to change the date format in the column to display the date number. currently i can get the date to only show ex. friday, 11:42 or yesterday 11:42. i would like to see friday 4, 11:42 instead.
it helps with sorting.

hope there's an option for this

running 10.5.6

From Finder go View > Show View Options, at bottom there's a check box for "Use relative dates."

did that and all that added was change fri to friday but everything pretty much stayed the same.

a while back i changed the formatting of my desktop topbar date and time. i got it just the way i want it to display a full date. here are some screens of that. not sure if that can possibly effect and i don't remember if the columns were different pror to that. i don't really want to change the date and time if there are still other options to change the format of the columns. took a while to figure it out.

thanks for the reply angelwatt and please let me know of any other potential resolution

That International part is the place to do it it seems. There's 4 format types when you go into Customize: Short, Medium, Long, Full. Which one is used in Finder depends on how wide that date column is. You should be able to get the date format you want. I tried it out and it worked, or at least what I interpret as you wanting.
