I tend to work from a finder window and my actual desktop gets very cluttered and usually I don't care what it looks like because in the column view of the finder window it's all nice and neat.
I had changed the desktop background to a picture of the cat from Shrek 2 and centered it. All was well. Then I was trying to find something in all that mess and the cat hairs kept getting in the way so I decided to change the background to a solid color so I right-clicked and did all that, but only got the solid color in a little box in the middle of the screen. I had to go back to the picture of the cat and change it from "center" to "full screen" and then back to solid color and then it worked.
Guess with all the other things the Apple engineers had to do they missed that one.
