I have a 2008 Mac pro which I will be selling once my new iMac arrives.

I have a time machine backup of my current Mac (using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard) and I'm considering the best way to set up the new iMac.

Obviously the new machine will be shipping with the latest OS, can I migrate my old data, mail, apps and files from the Snow Leopard TM backup?

Your accounts (mail, music, movies, data) should "come across" ok with Migration Assistant.

Question:
How many of your apps are PowerPC-based code?
How many are universal binary or Intel based?

The Power-PC based code won't run on the new iMac.

You can check this by opening System Profiler and clicking "applications". Up above, choose to sort them "by kind". It will reveal which apps are Intel, which are Universal, and which might be PPC only.
