Okay, I've Googled how to change the icons for file types on the Mac. I did this for a few files.

It works great when I open up a Finder window and "view by icon". However, when I switch to "view by list" or "view by columns", the old icon files are being used.

Now, yes, I could change the files one by one using Command-I, because this also seems to work for list view and column view, but I could also spend all day snapping the elastic in my clothes. I'd rather not have to do it that way.

What is the "hidden process" for changing icons in ALL views?

I know this is possible, because Iconic can do it. However, I don't want to download any software that will only be used once.

(This is posted in Yosemite, because that's the OS I have, but this might be a problem with older OS's.)

((Later: )) I created the file from the command line, if that helps any.
