I assume you are referring only to MS Word?

Click once on any Word doc file. Right click GetInfo
Click on the Word icon and Paste you new icon.

I must add that before you do this you need to do the above and copy the icon to your clipboard before you past.

That only works for one file. I want to change the icon for all word documents

getting MS Office icons

This is a bug that will require a fix from Apple. A quick, laborious fix is to do Get Info, then Command-C to copy the Word icon that does, on my machine, show up in the upper left of the Get Info Panel, and then Command-V to paste the MS icon back onto the same spot. Oddly, that then makes the icon show up on the desktop file.
