I'm looking for a way to easly change the resolution of a quicktime file so that it plays widescreen. I would prefer it be stretched, but cut off is ok. Any programs or tips?

You will need QT Pro to do this.

Open movie in QT Pro, select movie properties (apple+j) on the 2 drop down menus, on the left one select "Video Track" then "Size" on the right. Click the "Adjust" button. In the movie window you will have some red markers, select one of the corners markers and drag to the new size. As you resize the frame you will see the numbers in the "Current:" box change. when you get it to your new size select "done", then save the movie.

To go from 4x3 anamorphic to 16x9 you either need to reduce the height to 75% OR increase the width to 133%

The method evil_santa suggested is the best if you want precise dimensions, or you want to save the movie with its modified settings. There's a much easier crude method, however:

Open the movie in QT Player, hold down the shift key, and drag the resize corner. Instead of being held to the correct proportions, you can resize it to any proportions. The video will be stretched, not cropped.

Not precise, but a really quick fix for movies with the wrong proportions.

A Question Along the Same Line

How can I rotate a QT movie? I've stupidly taken some QT footage with digital camera and when it plays it's 90° rotated. All I'll have available is QT pro and iMovie.

Any help appreciated.

Yep you can do this in much the same way as the rezie, under the "Normal" button are a rotate CW & CCW buttons. or grab the red circle in the middle of the frame and rotate it manualy, you can also skew the image.

Thanks. Is that iMovie or QTP? I've not got access to either at the moment as I'm a man without a Mac at present (see sig.)

BTW I'd very much like an iPod this year(any flavour but 60GB photo if available) and can provide proof that I've been either good or 'evil' this year as required.

I've worked fairly extensively with FCP 3, and I've always been so frustrated dealing with anamorphic interlaced footage that I shoot, and interlacing issues when I scale it down resulting in lengthy recompression and de-interlacing solutions. If I had known it was that easy all along!

I'm a rather Power user, and it's not often that I learn something new and amazingly useful. Just one final question then. How can I make it so that I can fix an anamorphic clip to proper format, and get it to retain that shape for distribution? Am I stuck rescaling it in FCP for that purpose?

Thanks! Couldn't have hoped for a better answer. Along these lines, anyone know how to embed the command to make is full screen, even if the user doesn't have qt pro? I know you can do it, because some trailers do.
