Just jailbroke this weekend using the Jailbreakme.com method. Other than the BiteSMS issue, all has been smooth so far.

Is changing the root password a must?

For all the time it takes, I would definitely do it.

Get your hands on MobileTerminal through Cydia and do the following.

-Start mobile terminal (download and install via Cydia if you haven’t done so yet).
-Type su.
-Enter alpine as the password.
-At the prompt, type passwd.
-Enter your new root password. DO NOT FORGET THIS!
-Enter the same password again.

Since there isn't a iOS 4 compatible Mobile Terminal in Cydia's stock repos:

http://code.google.com/p/mobileterminal/

There's a repo listed/recommended through this site, which is the official "home" for the app. The repo doesn't accept pirated software and is safe to add to Cydia. Unlike some repos, it's also easy to delete. Or you can download the .deb file directly and SSH it into place.
