Changing sim Cards

I am looking at buying a new iphone and want to know if i have a US model (where I live) and I travel somewhere else, ie europe, can I put in a local prepaid sim card and have it work or would i need an iphone specific card. I expect to lose advanced feature but it would be nice to be able to use it as a phone?

No. The phone (as purchased) is locked to AT&T.

That's not saying that some way to unlock it will surface eventually...
