I have read up on this problem, and I have seen the simple answer of going into information and changing the open with program and then changing it for all.

My problem is, these files are not on my laptop, I am accessing files from my PC via the network. So, I think the problem is that the mac os is trying to change the file (on my PC), and it then tells me this:

"The item is either locked or damaged or you don't have permission to change it."

Well, I am aware I don't have permission to change it. I am hoping there is some way to set VLC as my default player.

The file in question is a flv file, opened with the crappy flash player I found on the Apple website. I then realized, after downloading and installing the crap player, that VLC was available for the Mac OS. Doh!

Whatever my stupidity was, I would appreciate some help with this problem. I just received my first ever Mac this Friday, and I hope this doesn't become my first disappointment.
