Changing the Icon

I'm on the desktop and I have some folders.
I downloaded some icons.
Now I want to change the normal pics of the folders with the icons that i downloaded.
How do I do that?

Select the icon, choose get info from File menu. Click on the icon, choose copy. Repeat these steps with the folder icon except substitute paste for copy.

in my experience, you have to use the key commands for cut and paste to change the icon - selecting the options from the edit menu won't do it. I have no idea why this is or if it happens to everyone, but something to keep in mind.
