Changing the L/R balance of speakers?

Hello folks. I know that the left/right balance of the iBook (and other Macs I presume) can be set manually through System Prefs -> Sound -> Output but since getting my iBook a few weeks back I've had a little unwanted problem. The speaker balance seems to adjusting itself either way to the left or way to the right - when I view the balance settings in System Prefs after this has happened the slider has quite clearly moved despite the fact I haven't touched it. I think it has something to do with using the volume keys (F3, F4 and F5). Is there some kind of shortcut I'm advertently messing with?

This is a known issue (in English: search next time )

It happens sometimes if you press the volume keys rapidly enough that the screen's volume display cannot keep up (i.e. under high CPU loads).

I think it is a new issue to 10.2.6. To avoid it, press the key ONCE and wait for the display to come up, then finish your adjustment.
