Changing User name, password

I received a MacBook Pro from my grandaughter and I need to install my Verizon wifi software which I downloaded from the Verizon site. I need to change the password, as I changed the user name (don't know how I did it). The Apple help site says I need to reinstall the OS X software, but that requires the password, which I don't have! :confused:
