I need to be able to edit movies I rip using mac the ripper in imovie but first i need to convert that .vob file into something that can be read. what FREE program do I use to convert those files?

Handbrake is the wrong tool if you want to convert to an editing format. Handbrake is designed to convert footage to MPEG-4, yet another delivery format.

MPEG Streamclip (along with Apple's MPEG-2 Playback Component) or DVDxDV can do what yoiu want.

Mpeg Streamclip FTW

I work in a Tv studio and we use it all the time when we have to rip dvds. This workflow IS NOT optimal because you lose quality with MPEG2.

Also, if the OP is trying to re-cut commercial DVD's (for educational use), you will need to DeCSS it with MacTheRipper. Mpeg streamclip can still convert the VOB's from the hard drive after the rip.
