Character count in Pages '08?

Is there a way to count how many characters are in a Pages '08 document? I'm working on an essay that can be no longer than 5300 characters and would like to know how many I have down before I re-type it into the online entry (don't know if formatting will transfer if I cut-and-paste, but retyping a page is no big thing). I tried Pages help and searching here but didn't turn up anything useful so if there's a way to count characters, I'd appreciate the help.

It's in the Inspector. Click the document button; furthest left, then click Info.
