Character Viewer - Favorites section is gone

After loading Yosemite, I attempted to insert a special character from Character Viewer for the first time and discovered that my previously populated Favorites section of special characters exists no more.

Experience this loss of Favorites globally in all apps, e.g. Word, Excel, Mail, etc.

Is there any way to restore the Favorites list or must I rebuild from scratch ?
