Has anyone ever had Apple charge you for a repair after telling you they wouldn’t?

I bought the iPad Folio 11 from Apple back in December and it’s starting to come apart. The Folio has a 1 year warranty, but stores are closed so I contacted Apple via iMessage and they agreed to send me a new one and have me return the old one. The person in chat said they needed to put a hold on my card, but that it would be removed when I returned the old Folio case.

Well the case arrived today, but there was no return box. When I checked on the case it said no return was needed, but there was still a repair part charge on it. I called up Apple and spoke to Apple Care who told me that they don’t do replacements of the Folio outside of stores and they the replacement was done as a self-repair. That basically means they charged me and sent me a new item. Unlike a purchase though they don’t allow returns on self-replacement parts. The Folio I received looks like it was taken off the store shelf. It even still has the piece so it can hang. It didn’t come with an invoice though, so it effectively looks like it fell off a truck.

Obviously I’m extremely annoyed since now not only was I charged, but I can’t return it.

The person tried to escalate to a senior care person, but they didn’t answer. I have a scheduled call for Tuesday now, but that’s with a regular Apple Care person who will then try to transfer me to senior care again.

I could dispute the charge, but I used my Apple Card so I have a feeling that wouldn’t work, plus I can’t really do that while I still have the item. I need to find a way to get them to do what they said they would.

Anyone have any idea what to do?

Why? Seems to me that, if you have this in writing in a chat that you should be well covered.

Tell Goldman Sachs why you're disputing the charge then get a hold of Apple again and show them the chat and ask them when are they going to send you the box to return the old item, stating that you're disputing the charge.

The person I spoke to at Apple could see the chat, but she wasn’t authorized to do anything about it. She basically told me the person who originally told me about the return box was wrong and only someone higher up the chain could do anything about it.

For the moment I’m not going to dispute the charge until I speak to senior care, but if I don’t get a resolution after doing so I will.

Nothing quite grabs someone's attention better than disputing the charge!

Good luck with the fight and, if you get a chance to, then please do keep us here in the loop with the latest.

Managed to speak to a senior care support who put in a refund request. I just got an email that it was approved, so all is good.

Did you get to keep both then?

Yep. Though after switching to the new one, I realize how bad the old one had gotten. It wasn’t just coming apart, it felt flimsy and worn out.

I hope the new one holds up better. I have a case on my old iPad Air 2 that’s lasted years without looking anywhere near as bad as this case did after 6 months.
