Charger not supported? (6+ or iOS8?)

Have a car charger (belkin i believe) for the old iOS type port.
Worked great with :
iPhone 4 on iOS5
iPhone 5 on iOS6 (with Apple adapter)
iPhone 5S on iOS7 (with Apple adapter)

But the 6+ on iOS 8 charges for about 30 seconds to a minute, before saying this accessory is not supported. I though the "lightning authentication" came with iOS7, so if it worked on iOS7, then it should work on iOS8 too right?

My wife gets all that time on her iPhone 5 - very frustrating. I don't think its an iPhone 6 issue, but some iPhone/iOS "feature"

Is her phone also on iOS8?

Did iOS8 just become more strict on the authentication of lightning chargers then?
