MacBook Pro 2019 comes with a 61W charger (and a thick USB-C to USB-C cable). I presume it’s this wattage to allow you to charge and use it at the same time.

However it’s a huge charger here in UK with the pins as well (that don’t fold). Is it ok to use a lower wattage charger, say an Anker PD1 GaN, that is tiny compared to it? Is there a minimum wattage that is required for charging. Not bothered on slower. Would the 30W be enough to charge and use it, or only charge out when it’s off?

Also the USB-C cable that came with it is bet thick, others bought from amazon, even Apple ones are not as thick - why?

Power bank, what specs are required for charging? I presume a USB-C for power delivery is needed

Thanks

You can charge it with a 5w phone charger if you want, it would just be very slow... 30w would be okay, potentially could at least sustain a charge if on and doing light work.

The cable is thick due to the power transfer capability, I believe all those cables are capable of 100w transfer, the thinner ones only say 30w. The adapter, cable, and computer communicate to determine the maximum safest power transfer, then deliver it.

Basically, if in a pinch or wanting a travel adapter for occasional use, the 30w should be okay.

surely there is a safe minimum though. I know what you say about the 5v one, happy to just use the 30W when not using the MBP to charge as I feel the 61W is huge.

cant seem to buy the thick one though, ones in Apple shop even just the normal USB-C type. So will this affect charging if just get a thin one and then power would be reduced? What about say Anker USB-C, these are normal thin type.
