I'm considering getting the OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock for my 2017 15" MacBook Pro. From the reviews, apart from the price, it appears that the only downside is that it charges at 60 watts vs. 85 watts. I'm assuming this will still charge the laptop, even when in use. Is there any danger to the 15" MBP by charging at 60 watts? I don't mind if the charging is just slow, I just don't want to damage my MBP and also want to ensure that at use, my batter won't go down when plugged in to this unit.

Unless your 35watt gpu and 45watt cpu plus ssd and ram and screen are pulling more than 60w together then it will just slow the discharge as it can do even on the 85w charger. It will all depend on the demands you are putting in the machine I would be looking for one with 100w charging myself.

I somehow switched 60/80 chargers with a friend and used a 60 on my old 15" for months without realizing

It won't damage anything, just charge slower. And of course, if you are doing something very computation-intensive, its possible that the charger won't be able to provide enough power.
