I've always used the charger and cables that came with my iPhones so as to not risk damaging the battery by using a 3rd party solution.

I picked up an Altec Lansing smart hub yesterday. It has 5 USB ports on it and supposedly can detect what device you've plugged in and provide the right amount of juice to charge it. This thing charges my phone relatively what seems to be faster than the little square and cable that came with the phone.

Is it safe to continue to use this thing?

electrical and battery people chime in.

The phone will limit what it can handle, so it should be fine. The little cube charger only provides 1A of current while phones since iPhone 6 can handle more than that for charging (which is why an iPad charger can charge those phones a bit faster as it can provide a bit more current and the phone can handle that).
