Charging blackberry off late 08 MBP

I'm having difficulty charging my blackberry using the USB port of my late 08 MBP. Looks like some power is being delivered, the blackberry shows the charging icon, but the charge is extremely slow - plugged in most of the day and still not better than half way.

Things I know
1) it's not because MBP is moving into suspend mode, disabled that
2) System Profiler sees the blackberry, but says "unknown" in the current required field.

I imagine point 2 is the crux of the problem but have no idea how to tell it to give more power.

On my Windows box, it won't charge the BlackBerry unless the drivers are installed.

I'd trying installing the software and see if it works.
