Hello party people,

I've wondered about this for years and never really took the time to settle it once and for all.

So, when it comes to charging my devices (iPhone Pro, Watch Ultra, iPad Pro, MBP, AirPods Pro) I always use the provided power adapters and cables. I refuse to use non-branded cables, as I always fear they could damage my devices.

That might be a quirk, but here comes the thing that is worrying me: Can I use different power adapters for different devices? For example, I use the 20W power adapter for my iPhone and the Watch and the iPad. But I don't use that one for my MBP, as I believe it would damage it as it's not enough output.

However, I also don't use the MBP power adapter (96W) for the iPhone/iPad/Watch/AirPods Pro, as I believe its output is too high and damages the devices.

So I always end up carrying more adapters or have to wait and rotate till I can finish charging my devices.

I feel embarrassed to ask it, but I don't understand the technicalities of it and what's the right thing to do and preserve battery and device health.

Now I'm reading there is a new 40W-60W power adapter available in the UK and I'm wondering, how would that fit into that system?

Would appreciate your help and clarification,

have a great weekend!

At the end of the day, the short answer is that chargers of different watt ratings will not damage any of these devices. You will see a great variance in how long it takes to charge devices if you are using a charger with a LOWER power rating than what came with it (it will charge slower).
Now, with rapid charging, the output voltage can vary, so that is another discussion.

Here is a great discussion on the topic:
